Algebra is by far the most repeated course in K-12. It is often the first course where students are required to think abstractly. Unlike other subjects, math can be difficult to grasp no matter how hard you study. This can hurt the confidence of otherwise very bright students. Due to large class sizes and limited resources, it can be difficult to help students of all learning styles and give them the individual attention they need. This can be a giant roadblock for future success. And as math concepts build on themselves, many students get left behind and are not able to catch up.
Mathdifferent is a nonprofit offering free one-on-one math tutoring. We match our mentors with students based on fit. Our goal is not only to help students pass their class, but to get to know them holistically, cater to their learning style, and identify issues in and outside the classroom. Math is our primary focus, but we also work on building good habits and learning valuable life skills. We believe that building rapport fosters trust, enables effective communication, and creates a safe learning environment where no question is "too dumb to ask." And hopefully provides students with a positive and lasting role model.
